She was raised as an only child in Brooklyn, New York. She celebrates her birthday on the 10th of September. She grew up in a working-class family and attended public schools in New York City. 

In terms of her education, she completed her studies at White Plains High School and subsequently registered at the University of Michigan. She successfully obtained a degree in Honors Arts from the University in 2008.

Starting in September of 2008, Mara began working as a staff editor at The Atlantic Wire. After a year with the company, she moved on to join AOL News in January of 2010. 

During her time at AOL, Mara worked as a breaking news reporter for a year, taking advantage of the opportunity to expand her knowledge and talents. In 2011, Mara joined The Daily as a national enterprise reporter, working there for a year. 

Prior to joining The New York Times, Mara spent five years at The Wall Street Journal as a reporter.
